Focusing On Wildlife 3/10/15: Purple Swamphen Porphyrio has been split into five species by IOC 5.3, largely in accordance with Sangster 1998 and Garcia & Trewick 2015. This decision, already implemented for some years by DB, will be followed by OSME as well and means that birders in the Middle East now have to discern breeding Grey-headed Swamphen P poliocephalus and vagrant African Swamphen P madagascariensis. Nominate Western Swamphen in Morocco / southern Spain has been reintroduced in eastern Spain and Italy, and spread north into France.
