Bij Erjos zag ik de Laurierduif alleen via de bekende fly-bys, maar de Bolles liet zich tijdens beide bezoeken prachtig zien. |

Eduard, you have been very lucky. It's not easy to obtain good photos of this species in a short stay in the Canaries, like in your case.

Way more easy to see perched on La Palma.

Dear Leo,
You're right. perhaps in La Palma it is more easy to obtain photos of this species. In Tenerife there are good populations e.g. in the Anaga massif, Monte del Agua and Ladera de Tigaiga, but even if the species is locally common, without a hide and patience it is very difficult to take good images of the pigeon.

While looking for a suitable photograph to post the announcement below, I noted that there are no photographs of Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) on our site. I wonder how many birdwatchers, including hardcore WP twitchers, can say with confidence that they have seen a genuinely wild individual. This seems to be a species that has been overlooked by birdwatchers. Does anyone have a good photograph from the remaining pure/wild populations in Europe?
Those interested in this topic, may consider watching an online presentation by Will Smith (PhD, Oxford University) that takes place Monday 6th November 18:00 - 20:00 (UK time; i.e. 19:00 - 21:00 CET) titled Rock Doves Columba livia and the process of ‘extinction by hybridisation’. It is organised by the British Ornithologists Club and the Linnean Society of London. Tickets are free and can be obtained here.
