The present number of pairs of Egyptian Vulture in the Canaries (Fuerteventura and Lanzarote islands, plus Alegranza islet) is about 80, apart from a good number of non-breeding birds. Fortunately, present situation of the species is much better than in the 80s and 90s, when the population was of only 20-30 pairs. This is the result of a hard work in the conservation of this vulture from the end of the 90s. At the moment this work continues. When visiting Fuerteventura or Lanzarote, birders need to maintain distance from the breeding territories, in order to avoid unnecessary disturbance. The species is easily seen in many places without approaching its nests.

Gaaf, ik wist niet dat t n andere ondersoort is geworden. Enig idee hoe dat met de vogels in de Kaap Verden zit?

Dear Eduard and Leo,

The name of the Canarian subspecies of Egyptian Vulture is Neophron percnopterus majorensis. It has been confirmed both morphologically and genetically. As far as I know, the Cape Verdean population is not considered different from the mainland one, In any case, the situation of the species in this last archipelago is critical, as showed in a recent paper published in the journal Bird Conservation International.
